I inherited a beautiful diamond engagement ring from a family member, my lady loves it, but it has some damage that may make the diamond come loose. The diamond is held in place by 8 gold “posts” (not sure what the right word would be) and one of them is broken.

I would like to have this repaired so she can wear her ring without fear of losing the diamond. What’s a reasonable (ballpark) price for this type of work?

I had picked out my own ring and knew I was getting it, but didn’t know when, although I had a feeling it was going to be 22nd birthday present. We went to Six Flags, where we had our first date, and stood in front of the fountain to get our photo taken. He told me some line about his sisters friend who worked there who said they have to take so many photos before they can take a break and felt sorry for them, we never take photos so that was good excuse. When the person was taking the photo, he pulled out the box and gave me my ring. His great line was “Well, here you go!” lol. He’s a great guy but not good with words.
The bad thing was, though, the ring didn’t fit my finger at all and had to be resized before I could even wear it! During the resizing process, a diamond was knocked loose and it took nearly a month to get it repaired properly. Crazy, huh?
At least we have a good story out of it right? At the time I was crushed but I think its funny now.

So, how did it happen?
I enjoyed all of the stories and I have no idea why anyone would give any of them a thumbs down. I’m putting this question up for vote because I feel there is no best answer as all answers are lovely.

The jeweler said there was always a chance the corner could chip while tightening it so he didn’t tighten it all the way. So now it is loose again. It just slides a little bit when i push it with my finger nail. It is a princess cut (square) with a prong holding it at each corner. Should I be worried that it will fall out? If I take it to get tightened at a different store should I be worried about the corner chipping if they tighten it too much?
I dont have insurance on it and my fiance bought it from a jeweler that is several states away from where I am… eek

I bought a really beautiful sapphire several years ago nd finally had the money to have it set into a ring. Since it’s slightly off in shape I had a custom setting with a halo of smal diamonds and a plain shank done in white gold.
The first two things that were wrong were that i had asked for it to be prong set and it was bezel set, and the diamonds were set all crooked and not well done at all. I mentioned the problem and she straightened out the diamonds for the most part. I was willing to live with it. But now just two months later the bezel set sapphire is loose. What can I do?
