6bits asked:
My husband bought a warranty with the earrings he gave me for a gift. They 1 carat studs set in white gold. They have the screw on back. I took them in for their 6 month inspection at a chain jewelry store and the diamonds were loose so they had to send them in to get tightened.
I also needed a new screw back. Now that I got them back and have worn them a handful of times I notice that the stem is getting tarnished. The part of the stem that has the grooves for the screw is getting dark grey and that has never ever happended before I took them in. I do not sleep with them or wear them in the water. The srew backs are different than the original ones. Does anybody know what is causing this? Do they change out the whole earring whenthey tighten loose stones?

They don’t always change the stem when they tighten the diamonds. If they did, they should have told you that they had done so. All I can say is that the the stem should not be turning dark on you if it’s made out of white gold. Others can feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but usually only silver and plated jewelry turns dark like that. You should take it in to another fine jewelry shop and ask them to determine what’s wrong with the metal.
