Does anyone else feel this way about wedding rings?

Mrs Heather Schabby, M&D Goddess asked:

I am SO FRUSTRATED!

My rings (wedding band and engagement ring) are extremely important to me, and I never take them off. I’ve been married almost 2 years, and for the warranty on my diamonds I have to go in every 6 months for an inspection and a cleaning of my rings.

Both my engagement ring and my wedding ring have running diamonds on them.

Six months ago in May, they took my engagement ring away because a diamond was loose and they took 2 weeks to fix it.

Today, I went in to have my rings inspected again (it’s been 6 months) and they took my wedding band from me because a diamond was loose AGAIN!

I HATE WHEN THEY TAKE MY RINGS! I feel so naked, and honestly it’s weird but I get a little sad! I just want my ring back, and I want them to not be made so sh*tty that every 6 months they get taken away for 2 weeks! THEY WERE EXPENSIVE! Why do they keep falling apart?!

Anyone else feel depressed and naked without their rings?!

Not depressed, but I do feel naked when I am without my rings, which like you is very very rare. I love my rings and more importantly the meaning behind them - the love and commitment between me and my husband. But, as much as I love the rings, they are only the symbol - the meaning behind them is still there, whether I’m wearing them or not.

They keep falling apart because jewelry is the most overpriced, extremely marked up, pieces of crap people dump money into.

I never had an engagement ring or wedding band to be depressed over. I stay depressed for lack thereof…

Not me. I take my rings off sometimes because my fingers get “tired”. I used to wear a lot of rings, but lately I’ve been wearing less and less of them. The only ring I always wear is a very small ring that my parents got me for my 18th birthday. Also, I had to take my rings off when I worked on a pottery wheel; it didn’t cause me any problem. I don’t really notice when I’m not wearing the rings - I only notice sometimes when I am wearing them, and they get in the way.

I completely understand ya.

After talking with my jeweler since my rings kept having to go back in and get fixed for loose diamonds, he actually told me that while yes, I want to wear them CONSTANTLY and never take them off, I am slowly damaging them. He said that every time I bang it or what not, I am damaging the setting, loosening the stone. He strongly recommended that I take it off when I am going to be doing a lot with my hands…such as cleaning or cooking.

But I absolutely hate when I don’t have my rings on. It is depressing. Hope you get the ring back soon!

You sound like my wife.

If the ring is made of Gold, then you can expect some mainenace over the years. Gold is a very weak metal. Your ring will require them to add gold to the bottom in a few years as normal day activites will wear away the gold and make it thin.

The best advise is to get it insured. That way when it breaks or loses a diamond, it is covered. The only other options is to put it in a glass case for show and tell… but I doubt would go over well.

Some folks put their Gold Wedding rings away and get a more durable ring to wear everyday. Then pull the Gold one out for special events.

I temporarily lost mine once. I was pretty upset. You could get a simple band to wear when your regular one is in to be fixed. My wife’s original wedding ring is in her jewelry box. We got her one with diamonds in it for our 5 year anniversary. It had to go in once and she wore the original while the other was being fixed.

I had to go a year in Iraq without them because I didnt want to ruin them or have them stolen THEN when i got back i took them to get inspected before I put them on again and a diamond was loose so they needed 2 weeks to fix it. I felt naked and kept fiddling with that finger.

I would buy a plain band to wear when yours are in for care. Also get it appraised by someone other than the jewler you are going to to make sure they are doing quality work.

I am sentimental about my ring too.
A little off the subject, but I highly advise you to look at your ring through the maginifier, and make them mark its spots. that way, you know your are getting the same diamond back that you sent out. i hope i explained that well.

Nope. I have diamonds on every finger, some small, some quite expensive. I don’t have mine checked every six months because I just replace what falls out. Saying that…What do you do to keep breaking or chiping the prongs? I work outside a lot and have a tendency to bang my rings against something and of course that’s going to make the life of the prongs not last as long. It’s what you are doing that is working against you it sounds like. Enjoy your rings, it’s your fetish. Me, I am a diamond nut, don’t care how many I have to replace when the time comes. I am not going to leave my rings in a case because I am to afraid I’m gonna break something. Enjoy!

yes i feel the same way too, i felt so incomplete without my wedding ring as if its part of me…i understand your situation.

I always wear my rings but truthfully, I prefer them off. My finger looks weird without them on but my rings are heavy and it’s a nice break to remove them.

well i would complain . being that you saying they were pricey…. but yes i feel naked too =( where did you buy it from.. Robbins Bros. that where mines from. 3years and still sparkling rock solid =)

chichibaby on June 20th, 2009 1:18 pm:

No, I actually HATE my big ass ring..it’s annoying and it is forever snagging my clothes hair..etc. I am trading it in for something plain and simple and a lot smaller..im actually not wearin mine now..haha

I have one ring which is my promise/engagement ring. I feel naked with out it when I take it in for cleaning/re sizing! I am taking it in once more in the next 6 months to get re sized one last time after I hit my target healthy weight.

I agree with the others here, get another ring that you can wear that has a significant meaning between you and your spouse and wear that when your rings go in.

My fiancee is an electrician and for our wedding rings set he plans on getting 2 bands. 1 normal gold band and 1 tungsten band for when he works. Most of the guys he works with do not wear their rings because of the wear and tear on them from their work.

I’ve been lucky so far that my ring has not had a loose stone from my job, but I will also have 2 rings for the same reasons, 1 for work and 1 for wear outside of work.

moonlover on June 22nd, 2009 4:35 pm:

Yes I do feel naked without them. I felt so happy when he gave my engagement ring, because I really wasn’t expecting it that I’d hate to take it off.

Was I meant to laugh? on June 24th, 2009 8:03 pm:

They shouldn’t be coming loose. The cleaners could be switching them. You should have an independent jeweler/insurer check to see if there has been any tampering and if the diamonds are still actually diamonds, and if so, of the same color, clarity, carat, and cut as specified on your insurance or validation certificate.

We designed our rings & had them made by a silversmith & they are beautiful & just what we wanted. They hung on a tree in my garden before we were handfasted, which was a tree my husband bought for my birthday….

I never take my ring off & although I’d be upset if I anything happened to my ring I’d be more upset to lose my husband, the ring is a symbol of our love, not the be all & end all of it….
