Selling Gemstones - Ontario Canada?

monac_3972 asked:

I have some loose gemstones (precious and semi-precious - NOT diamonds) that I want to liquidate, but am unsure of what to do. I live in midwestern Ontario, but will travel as far as Toronto & Durham Region for a good jeweller willing to buy gems.
My question is - Where do I go? Who do I call? Should I have them appraised before I take them anywhere? I do not want to use ebay, or any other online seller, I would rather take the jewels to someone in person.
Thanks in advance for your responses.

I would call a jeweller with the names of what you have, they may not actually be worth a whole lot. (before you make some long trip) Most places will charge you for an appraisal, so I would check similar types on ebay just to see if it is worth it. Also will depend on how they are cut…rough are worth even less, as are just polished versus faceted.

Well, if trying to sell your gemstones to a jeweler, please be aware, many jewelers are not familiar with colored gemstones that much, or might know what it is but are not willing to pay what it is worth.

I would make a detailed list of what you have and at least have the following information:

Gemstone Type
Carat Weight
Shape
Origin ( if possible )
Dimensions ( millimeter size )

Also color description. Be detailed…don’t say Green…but is it a dark green, light green, blueis green, etc.

Hope that helps…
