I have a family erlome diamond that is appox. 1 ct. I want to give it my to current girl friend to ask to marry me. I don’t know how to ask or what to do with just a diamond. Do I get it set first or is that something she should pick out. Please advise

Do you know what she likes? Because I’d go ahead and have it set first. It will be much better asking her with an actual ring and not just a diamond.
get a gold ring and put the diamond in it. lol problem solved ur only getting married and if she dont like the ring sell it and let her pick out another one. it should be ur choice not someone elses.
heirloom
go to jared’s and get it set. most women want white gold these days. can’t go wrong with a plain solitaire.
a one carat diamond should have a platinum head for security reasons.
i disagree with everyone. Make an appointment with a reputable jeweler to set the stone. Get a box for the stone and then tell her you have an appointment with the jeweler. That we she can set the ring the way she wants. She will be wearing that ring for the rest of her life, let her pick out the setting/side diamonds she likes.
You can do one of two things…
*Find a setting for that diamond first and get it set and then give it to your gf.
OR
*Go ahead and ask your gf to marry you with that loose diamond and go with her to find a setting. This option will ensure that she’ll get a setting that she will definitely like.
Very nice.
(It’s “heirloom” by the way.)
Most jewelers will sell you a very cheap band (i.e. less than $50) and mount the stone for you. Then, the girl has something to wear when she puts it on when you propose.
Then, the two of you can go back to the jewelry store and pick out a setting that you both like.
Or…
you can press your luck and hope she likes what you’ve chosen.
Or… you can drop hints to see what she likes. My fiancee said “I just want to be able to put my hands in my pocket” so I got her a platinum band in which the diamond was set way into the setting so it wouldn’t stick out or get caught.
Contact a couple of jewelry stores and ask if they do a cheap setting or a trade-in program
I buy all of my jewelry from Shane Co. (they’re regional…) and they have a program where they’ll set a diamond in a simple solitaire setting, and then let you come back with her to pick the final setting. You get 100% of the cost of the first setting deducted from the price if the setting you choose. I don’t know how they feel about outside stones, but they do all of their work onsite, instead of sending it off somewhere, and they will service your pieces for life, for free without inspection requirements.
Congratulations on your upcoming engagement!!!
As for the engagement, be creative, it will be a moment that you will be remember and will want to be proud of for the rest of your lives. No matter what you do, you must actually say some version of “will you marry me?”
As for the diamond, ask her friends and family about what she would like or if she would want to pick out the ring. Or you can ask her with a diamond and tell her that she can pick out the ring of her choice. My fiance asked me without a ring and I still said yes.
Good luck!
They make these little claw/wire holder things to hold loose diamonds that you can put in a ring box. Go to a jeweler and ask if you can purchase something like that, just to display the diamond to her to propose. Then you can go together and pick a setting (then you know she’ll love it, because she picked it).
Good Luck!
You have two options:
1. Present her with the diamond in a box and take her to go ‘ring’ shopping where she gets to pick out the setting.
2. Select a setting if you know her taste and have the diamond set before proposing.
Congratulations and good luck.
propose with flowers and go shopping together.

go to a jeweler and pick a setting.
if you want her to know, take her with you.
if not, go by yourself. and congrats on an upcoming engagement!!
