i already have the ring and the loose diamond

I’m sure they’re all different in costs. I would take it to a jeweler on different sides of town before I make the decision.
It depends on where you take it, the size of the stone and the setting. I have a channel set blue topaz ring that is missing a side prong tiny diamond (less than 1/4 carat) and the jeweler wanted $100 to set the diamond. (if they aren’t selling you either than they have to make their money somehow).
Good luck. And if nothing else I would make sure that you shop around. Don’t just go somewhere because it’s cheapest…check their quality of work and see what kind of guarantees they offer included in the price.
Ours said $20. But it ended up being $40. So go to a place you trust- they say not to go to malls to get this done… and then ask them- have them weigh your diamond, etc so you know about your diamond and know it is yours you will be getting back!
Good luck! Mine turned out beautiful- it’s a 97 yr old diamond in a new band we picked out!
Take it to an independently onwned local jeweler, not a cahin store. Make sure to ask them do show you any unique charecteristics of your stone so you can look at them again once its set. Usually jewelres will charge by the size of the stone. The larger teh stone the more it costs. I would say the prices will start around $75 and go up, that is of corse if you have the proper head on the ring you are adding the stone to.

It really just depends on where you take it. When I had my ring reset it cost me about $200. One other place I went to wanted to charge me $500. Your best bet is to just to call a couple of places and ask them.
